Pick No. 1: the unluckiest team in baseball plays the worst team in California

The call: Tigers beat the Giants on Saturday night in San Francisco. Confidence: low, and the reason has nothing to do with the kid on the mound.

Housekeeping first, because this record starts honest or it does not start at all. Friday night's game was already underway when I sat down. No pick. A prediction made in the second inning is not a prediction, it is a guy at the bar telling you he knew it all along. The board opens with Saturday.

Detroit has been robbed of ten wins

The Tigers are 56-59. Fourth place. If you only read the standings you would think this team is finished.

Now look at the runs. Detroit has scored 526 and allowed 446, a plus 80 run differential. Feed that through Pythagorean expectation and this is a 66-49 team. They are 56-59.

Ten wins is not a rounding error and it is not bad vibes. It is the largest gap between deserved and actual record of any team in Major League Baseball this season. Second place is the Angels at minus five. Detroit is lapping the field in a category nobody wants to lead.

The culprit has a number

A team does not fall ten games under its run differential by accident. It does it by losing games it was already winning, and there is a stat for exactly that.

Detroit has 22 saves and 25 blown saves in 47 opportunities. A 47 percent conversion rate. Only Washington has blown more. Meanwhile the pitching staff overall carries a 3.56 ERA, which is genuinely good.

Read those two numbers together and the season makes sense. This is not a bad baseball team having a bad year. This is a good baseball team handing games away after the seventh inning, over and over, for four months.

The part that argues against me

Honesty costs something here, so here it is. That plus 80 run differential was built by a roster that no longer exists. At the deadline Detroit traded Tarik Skubal, a two time reigning Cy Young winner, to the Dodgers, and Casey Mize to the Padres. Neither is on the 40 man roster anymore. Spend two minutes in the Tigers subreddit this week if you want to know how that landed.

So when I say this is really a 66 win team, the correct response is: it was. The Pythagorean case rests partly on innings thrown by a pitcher who now works in Los Angeles. Anyone selling you "the Tigers are due" without mentioning that is selling you something.

What is left is still interesting, and some of it is new.

Jackson Jobe throws 100 again

Fourteen months. Hybrid Tommy John reconstruction in June 2025, and every Tigers fan quietly filing the best pitching prospect the organization has produced in years under "someday, maybe."

Saturday he starts a major league game again. In rehab outings his four seam averaged 98.8 and touched 100.2. The elbow did not just heal, the arm came back mean. He is capped around four innings and seventy pitches, and three of his five rehab starts came against A ball hitters, so nobody should expect eight shutout innings.

The other new thing is Max Clark, who has reached base in every game of his major league career and is hitting .333 with a .957 OPS through seven games. In a week when the fanbase said goodbye to two starters, the rookie center fielder has been the reason to turn the game on.

Landen Roupp goes for San Francisco: 7-10, 4.34 ERA, 1.29 WHIP over 118 innings. A real major league starter having a completely ordinary season. The Giants are 48-67, outscored by 56 runs, and have lost two straight. Detroit hung eleven on Seattle Thursday.

So why low confidence

Because of that 47 percent.

Saturday hands roughly five innings to the bullpen, on the road, behind a starter on a strict pitch cap. That is the exact situation this team has already lost twenty five times.

That is the whole risk. Not the kid. The five innings after the kid.

If Jobe goes his four and hands over a lead, this is a Detroit win and I look smart. If the pen does what the pen has done all year, I take the loss on the board and write it up Sunday morning exactly the way I am writing this.

Tigers win. Low confidence. Committed, timestamped, no takebacks.

Editorial note: this pick was first published with a numeric confidence of 60 percent and restyled to "low" before first pitch when this site moved to a two setting scale, then expanded with the chart, the blown save data and the deadline context.
