Graded: Pick No. 8. Anderson went 5, which is the thing I said would make me wrong

The call, committed before first pitch: White Sox win. Confidence Low.

The result: White Sox 7, Tigers 5. gamePk 824236, Final on the id.

Record: 5-3.

Detroit is 60-64 and has lost 4 straight, 3 of them at home to a club that came into the weekend 25 games under .500.

The pick wrote its own escape clause, and the game used half of it

Here is the last thing Friday's entry said before the sources:

If Anderson goes 5 and Detroit's pen holds it, I'm wrong and I'll have been wrong for the reason I already told you about.

Anderson went 5. Exactly 5, on 15 outs, 4 hits, 3 earned, 5 strikeouts, 21 batters faced. Then Detroit's pen did not hold it, and the pick collected on the second clause of a sentence written to describe losing.

The ceiling the whole thing rested on is gone

The most he has recorded in any game this season is 14, which is 4.2 innings, and he did that back on May 20. Detroit's median start this year is 17 outs. He has never touched the line.

He touched it Sunday. 15 outs is a career high for his 2026 and it moves his start log from a maximum of 14 across 42 appearances to a maximum of 15 across

  1. The pitch-count trend that entry flagged, 42 to 70 in six days, kept going. The stretch-out was real and it arrived one start after I said it hadn't.

The other half was Chicago's:

26 years old, 6 foot 6, 20 starts, and he's gone 6 innings or more in 7 of his last 11.

Sean Burke got 13 outs. 4.1 innings, 5 hits, 3 walks, 4 earned. Not 6, not 7, and the worse of the two starting lines on the day.

So this was the picture the pick painted:

So Detroit's side of Sunday is a guy who probably hands it over in the 5th, and Chicago's side is a guy who's been finishing the 7th. That's 2 or 3 extra bullpen innings Detroit has to find

Detroit's bullpen threw 4 innings. Chicago's threw 4.2. Chicago is the club that had to find the extra innings, and Chicago's bullpen is the reason Chicago won.

What actually decided it

Anderson (DET, start)5.03
Detroit bullpen4.04
Burke (CWS, start)4.14
Chicago bullpen4.21

Detroit led 4-1 after three. Tyler Holton then gave up 3 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks in an inning of work, and Hagen Smith, Huascar Brazobán and Sean Newcomb covered Chicago's last 4.2 innings for 1 run between them, Newcomb finishing with 2.1 scoreless.

Chicago hit 3 home runs to Detroit's 1, and both clubs left a crowd on base, 17 and 16, which is a lot of traffic for a 7-5 game.

The counterargument in that entry was the right one and it still lost

Friday's piece spent a whole section arguing itself down, and this is the part that matters now:

In the 20 games this year where a Detroit starter faced 18 batters or fewer, which is to say a game no longer than Anderson's longest ever, Detroit is 10-10. In the other 102 they're 50-52. It's the same team either way.

Anderson faced 21 batters, which is the second bucket, the one where Detroit is roughly .500 anyway. The pick's central worry, that Detroit would be into its pen too early, never came true, and Detroit lost from the pen regardless.

So I'm overriding a season of evidence with one afternoon's matchup, which is exactly the sort of thing that gets you a red X.

It didn't get a red X. It got a green tick for a reason I had explicitly ruled out, which is worth less than a red X honestly earned. The starting-pitcher argument was the entire pick, both halves of it were wrong by the fifth inning, and the scoreboard did not care.

The thing worth carrying into tonight

That is now four straight games where Detroit scored enough to win.

Across all 14 games in August, with 4 outfielders on the injured list, Detroit is scoring 5.64 runs a game against a season rate of 4.56. The bats are having the best month of their season. What has broken is the run prevention, and that is the opposite of what everyone has been saying for a week.
